Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Uglies
Scott Westerfeld

An excited young girl named Tally is about to turn sixteen. Everybody knows that when you turn sixteen you get an operation to make you "pretty." Finally she is out of Uglyville and in to Pretty town, with all the others. Sadly, some people do not get the operation, and run away to the ruins. The ruins of the Rusties is a place where trees are cut down, concrete was poured, and it is completely messed up. Why would anyone want to go there? Why wouldn’t anyone want to be a pretty?
As Tally is trying to find more friends, she meets Shay. Shay is about to turn sixteen as well, but she does not want to go to Pretty town or get the operation. So, at night Tally and Shay go out to an old amusement park. This is where Shay tells Tally she has a friend that takes in all the people who do not want the operation. He takes them to a place called " The Smoke." Tally has nothing to do with it. She wants to become a pretty. She not going anywhere, especially to a place called The Smoke.
Things quickly change when Shay decides to run away, and wants Tally to come with her. Of course Tally says no, but Shay is persistent, and leaves a note. (Just in case.) What is she going to do? She is turning sixteen in just a few days, but she doesn’t want Shay to leave. Things don’t get any easier when she gets picked up for her operation. When she is there she learns that there is more than pretties and uglies in the world. There’s people called specials. Special circumstances. They’re the "police" that watch the runaways. They want the runaways to come back, and The Smoke to vanish.
Tally is the only one who is going to get Shay, and the others. She has to activate an amulet the special circumstances give her, to capture everyone and everything. If she doesn’t she will be an ugly. Forever.
I definitely liked this book. Who wouldn’t? The author really makes you think about stuff like: What if we were all the same? If we were, would people run away? And is being all the same a good thing? Being the same happens a lot. In our world we do try to turn pretty. How many people have or want plastic surgery? Billions of people think that when you hit a certain age you should get cosmetic surgery. These opinions have definitely put an impact on the world today. People think that these kind of surgeries look so important in our eyes, same as the Uglies. They want to get plastic surgery to look better. So does that mean we are all Uglies? That I don't know, but I do know that the theme of this book, and in our world could be, except yourself the way you are.

This book is really good, and really makes you think. The only thing i would say is that the middle of the book went really slow. I mean it spend like five chapters tell us that she was camping. Really? Why five chapters? Other than that it was a really good book and kept excitement.

The other books in the series.

I thought Uglies was a pretty good book. However, I didn't find the rest of the series as good as the first.

Great report. Apperenlty there is a theme going on because I too read this book. I loved it. And agree the middle went kinda slow. So, if you had the choice would you turn pretty? Or would you keep your old 'hidious' face?

flute ninja503 that is a great question. as mysef i would stay ugly, but as myself as the character i would probably turn pretty. Thats a pretty intense answer i just said. i gave that question a lot of thought while i was reading it, and that is what i would do. Thanks for the question!
