Cinder and Ella by Melissa Lemon

Cinder and Ella by Melissa Lemon is a fantasy packed novel blended with a tiny bit of romance. However; this Cinderella tale is unique and different because there are two sisters named Cinder and Ella.
Cinder is appreciated and loved by others, especially her family. In contrast, Ella is the third member of her family who is completely ignored. The young girl's mother also recognizes anyone but Cinder. Both Cinder and Ella are struggling to support their family.
Their dad mysteriously disappears, although no one knows why. Ella is gathering all her strength and courage to not give up on her father, so she's decided to find her father's tree. Her father told her a while ago about, "The Legend of the Trees." This legend is about how everyone has a tree planted to when they are born, and the tree represents their health in life. Ella truly believes in this old wives tale, and won't give up on her father. So she leaves her neglectful family without telling them where she is going.
Ella travels to finds her father's tree in hopes to find out for sure if her father is alive. Ella wonders if she can handle the truth or not. Along Ella's travels she meets a knight and falls in love with him. She must make a choice to rescue her knight or find her father's tree.
Meanwhile, Cinder is working as a maiden to support her family. She learns of Ella's disappearance and takes action to find Ella herself and hopes her family will do ok without her.
They eventually find a burnt tree; they assume their father is dead.
Both Ella and Cinder go through tests beyond their ability. The sisters learn very quickly that no matter what, family always sticks together.
As I read this book, I was drawn to it's amazing plot. However, I found it hard to have a connection with the characters because I was only interested in the plot.
The Legend of the Trees adds elements of mystery. Honestly, I find it strange that the world in which we live we cut down trees all the time. In this story, if you cut down a tree then the person the tree the person belongs to is assumed dead. So in a way I guess the author is trying to say that life and trees are both precious.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fairy tale with a little twist of adventure.
