Dragonfly by Julia Golding

The Fourth Crown Princess Taoshira of the Blue Crescent Islands is very young. She was recently elected and she did not know why. She's very bored with her new lifestyle. She does ceremony after ceremony to worship the islander's Goddess. When her so called sisters vote for her to go marry Prince Ramil ac Burinholt to unite their two countries, her whole world gets turned upside down.

Taoshira, or Tashi, sails across the sea to get to a land called Gerfal. She is very unhappy that she has to marry Prince Ramil. He insulted her in every possible way. Tashi stopped eating and wouldn't come out of her chambers for weeks. King Lagan, Ramil's father, tries to comfort her, which works a little. Tashi has showed interest in the palace horses, so Ramil decided to take her on a ride. That's where it all went wrong.

Ramil was riding on a horse while leading Tashi's. Ramil was very skilled on the horses, but Tashi had never ridden before. Ramil started to take the horses too fast, which Tashi did not like. Once he stopped, she got off the horse and started toward the palace. Ramil started to feel bad about what he had done and tried to go apologize. Before he could reach Tashi though, he gets kidnapped by some circus folk.

The circus people treated Tashi horribly, but treated Ramil fairly. They call Tashi a witch because she believes in a Goddess instead of a God, like the rest of them. The circus people, except for one, treat her like she's worth nothing. The one who treats her well is named Gordoc and he is the giant of the group. At first, it seems that he is one of the antagonists, but he turns out to be a good guy. He treats Tashi like she is a princess and can't stand it when people hurt her.

Now that Ramil has gone missing, King Lagan has put guards all over Gerfal. Because of these guards, the circus people stow Tashi and Ramil in a cage with a tiger. None of the guards want to search a tiger's den, so they leave the cage alone. This angers Ramil greatly. His people are about to enter war and those people won't even search a tiger's cage. Yet, where he was at that moment, he couldn't really do anything about it.

Once they all reached their destination, they unloaded themselves and the few pieces of cargo they had. Ramil was surprized to see that it was Fergox Spearthrower's land, who was claiming war on Gerfal. Fergox tells Ramil his plans to marry Tashi. Ramil gets angry, but hides it well. Tashi and Ramil are held prisoner in Fergox's kingdom for a long time. The people call Tashi a witch, which hurts her feelings badly.

Ramil planned an escape and Ramil, Tashi, and Gordoc make it out of the kingdom. They go stay with some rebels out in the wilderness, and Tashi and Ramil fall in love. When staying with the rebels, they gain some more companions. Yelena and Melletin. As the party was heading south, they ran into a group of slave traders. They capture everyone but Tashi, who jumped into a river and given up for dead. Ramil falls apart.

While Ramil is taken prisoner, Tashi is found by one of the horses they had been riding the whole way. This horse protected her like no other. When she goes riding by some horse followers, she meets Ramil's granpa. Ramil's grandpa is named Zaradan. He helps Tashi get a boat to head home to the Blue Crescent Islands.

While Tashi was going through that ordeal, Ramil was organizing a slave revolt. He made a slave army and fought their masters, soldiers, and eventually even Fergox himself. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It was brilliantly written. It shows that even when two people are so different, they can still love one another. Although it's good, the romance can get a little cheesy and it's placed in the olden days, making it hard to understand.
