City of Bones by Cassandra Clare follows the Hero's Journey very well, its very predictable in my opinion and is kind of cheesy. This book is mainly about a girl named Clary, who has been raised her whole life knowing nothing about her real past, and the magical life around her. Her mother wanted to keep this secret from her because she was afraid that something "bad" will happen to her. So she lives like this for long time, then her mother and her get into a fight and low and behold, her mother gets stolen by one of the evil guys named Valentine. But it was one of his henchmen, who attacked her and stole her. They forced her into giving him what he wants to make more of his kind.
Once Clary finds out about her mother and the magical world in which she belongs, she is on her adventure to find her mother and stop Valentine. On her adventure she uncover many surprising secrets, which even I was like, "What??" It totally blew my mind. With Clary's best friend Simon they go on many of these adventures together. Now you would hope their would be some romance right? Well...it's not a way you would hope for but it was alright.
In this book there is some language(swearing and such), but there isn't much. Just a fair warning! This book was really good. I thought it was very clever how the weapons were so detailed and the different kind of mystical creatures were really interesting. Despite the cheesiness, it was a pretty good and the author did a really good job of keeping the over exaggerated mystical stuff under control.
I liked this book because the characters were really awesome and the plot was clever, it had lots of suspense and the book made me laugh a lot. I look forward into reading the next few books in the series and I hope they will be even better than the first.
