Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer

Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer is written  by John Grisham.  The genre of this book is fiction and adventure.  This book's theme is even kids can do great things.  Theodore Boone is a kid who loves anything to do with the law.  He dreams of being a great lawyer or an outstanding judge.  His parents are both lawyers.

Theodore Boone is in love with the law. He helps kid "clients" by giving them advice and helping with problems. When Mr. Duffy, someone in town, is accused of killing his wife, Theodore goes to every single court meeting. While Theodore is helping a "client", he learns that the "client's"cousin had seen the murder of Mrs. Duffy.  The only problem is the cousin is an illegal immigrant and is afraid to testify because he would be deported.

This book's theme is even kids can do great things and the author of this book shows this in many ways.  Theodore overlooks the dangers of getting involved with this case and cares more about saving the day. He helps the immigrant get sponsored for his green card. Theodore tries to make sure that justice is done.  In this book Theodore's friends support him by getting him information even though it is dangerous to them.  The author does a good job showing the theme.

This book was great I loved it.   It was exciting and interesting.  I agree with the author about kids being able to do great things because I know of many examples where kids have helped solve adult problems kids.  I thought this book was cool because it brought a new style to me.  How often do you read lawyer books?  This book helped me realize that I can make a difference and I thought that was pretty cool.  I would rate this book an A it was exactly the kind of book I enjoy reading.

Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix

Among the Hidden is a book about a boy named Luke who is born in a time where parents, by law, could only have two kids. If more than two children were born into a family than the third child would have to hide or else if he/she were to be caught they would get a huge fee or execution. Luke was a third child, they were also called shadow child. So Luke is alright to be outside because his closest neighbors were a few miles away and there was a woods surrounding Luke’s house until the government forced Luke’s family to give them the woods. The government wanted the woods so they could build houses for barons. This was going to force Luke inside of his house, maybe for the rest of his life. Luke got used to the patterns of the days and he got really bored. But he had vents that he could look out of to see the houses of the neighbors, which had recently moved in.

One day when Luke was looking through his vent he thought he saw a someone but he had seen everyone in the house leave, both of the kids and both parents. Luke thought it was another shadow child and he made a plan to go over to the house and check it out. But since he was a shadow child he couldn’t be seen. Luke finally thinks up a plan to go over and see if there is another shadow child in his neighborhood.  He knows it’s dangerous but he just has to take the risk.

I really liked this book, it had some suspense once I realized what was going on, I really got into it. I couldn’t put the book down and it was really good. I think the author was going for the idea that the government is taking control over everything. In the book this government got whatever they wanted whenever they wanted with the exception of people having shadow children. This book I thought was an A+ because it was very entertaining to read. 

The Wizard Heir by Cinda Williams Chima

     NOTE:  If you want to understand this book fully, you should read "The Warrior Heir."  This book is not exactly a sequel to "The Warrior Heir," but it does build off its information.

     Seph McCauley is not your everyday kid.  In fact, he is a Wizard.  He is part of the Weir, or the magical guilds of people who have special powers.  Seph is not trained in Wizardry, so he tends to have a lot of accidents, like burning down a warehouse and killing one of his best friends.  Luckily, Seph gains some training at the all boys' school in Maine called the Havens.  However, he doesn't get it from the person you would expect, which is from the headmaster of the school, who is also a Wizard.  When Seph refuses to link to the evil headmaster, Gregory Leicester, he gets very mad.  He will stop at nothing to get to Seph. 

     When Seph finally escapes the Havens and the torture that Leicester has put him through, including nightmares and hallucinations, he heads to the sanctuary where nobody can hurt him in Trinity, Ohio.  However, this peace cannot last.  While sailing with his friend Jack Swift (the main character and narrator of "The Warrior Heir"), Seph gets caught by Leicester again..  He has an epic battle in which he defeats Leicester and frees all of the Alumni, which are Leicester's human slaves.  He also learns who his real parents are, and gains some friends. 

     Overall, this is a pretty good book.  I thought it was better than "The Warrior Heir."  This  book held plenty of action for me and helped me realize how power hungry some people can be.  One thing that really bugged me was that there was a character at the beginning of the book who never gets mentioned again.  Besides that fact, I thought that the plot turns that this book features were very interesting to read.   So, I would recommend this book to almost anyone.  I would give it a grade of an A.

I Am Number Four By:Pittacus Lore

     I Am Number Four was a great book. Although I am not an alien type of girl, or one to really ponder if there are aliens I still found this book enjoyable. It kept me fascinated and wondering about what was going to happen next  even when I wasn't reading the book. This book has suspense, friendship, bravery, and even a little romance.
    
     This book is about aliens if you haven't guessed that yet. The main character ( Four) and his guardian ( Henri ) along with 16 others have come from the planet Lorien to protect their race and also earth from being destroyed form another evil race called the Mogadorians. The Mogdorians have already sucked four's planet clean of its resources and now need more power so they are coming to earth to do the same.

     Four and Henri have been on earth for 10 years now making four fifteen and Henri mid fifties. Ever since they have arrived on earth the have moved every couple of months so that the mogdorians will not be able to catch them and kill them. Every time that they move Four has to get a new identity and start at a new school with a new life story to go with it. For the main part of the story you are with Four and Henri in Paradise, Ohio, a tiny little town. In Paradise for the first time ever Four actually makes a couple of friends. He meets Sam, a total nerd who is always thinking about aliens, and he also meets  Sarah who soon becomes much more than a friend. Four has never made attachments anywhere else so this place feels special to him.

      I don't want to give to much away but, I think that the author was trying to say was, protect those you love and what you stand for no matter the cost. And that is because, many of times Four has put his life on the line to save Sarah, Henri, and his friend Sam. He also has to  protect himself from getting caught by the Mogadorians.

     Over all I thought that it was a really good book and I definitely recommend it to anyone especially if you are a sci-fi lover. There was actually a movie made on the book last year here is a link to the trailer, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5djHG3hPu0. All in all it was a really good book and you should go check it out. 

How I Got This Way by Patrick McManus

The saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" is definitely not true for this gem of a book. Just look at the cover. You can tell right off that the book will be funny. How I Got This Way and all the other Patrick McManus books that I've read have all been the same; hilarious. This book starts out slow (for Patrick McManus) but there are certain stories that got me laughing so hard that I thought for sure I would get kicked out of the cafeteria during Patriot Time. Seriously.

 This book is a compilation of awesome stories that all talk about past adventures of the one and only Patrick McManus. He loves the outdoors so that is what he primarily writes about. Pat loved to fish, hunt, and do other crazy things in his childhood and even when he was an adult. Unlike most stories, these stories do not go in chronological order. They jump around from his childhood enterprises with Rancid Crabtree, Retch Sweeney and Crazy Eddie Muldoon to his adult mishaps (many) and his triumphs (few). But with Patrick McManus writing, he can turn a plain old, everyday story into an awesome tale that will bring many a tear to your eye from laughter. In this book, Pat writes about many things from what happens when you combine a powerful, homemade slingshot named Whopper with Rancid Crabtree and Gram's giant pumpkin, to how he became an outdoor humorist, all the way to telling the reader about his successes of creating a one mile radius between he and the deer he is hunting. The stories are all completely different but they all relate to outdoor adventures, his main form of fun.

This book is simply hilarious. Although it doesn't quite compare to the likes of some of his other books, I still really liked this book. If you haven't read any of Patrick McManus's other books, you will probably think this is one of the funniest books that you have ever read. It was entertaining and I got lots of weird looks from different people as I just laughed my head off. Surprisingly, Pat isn't just a funny guy. He is an extremely talented writer because he paints a vivid picture of what he talks about in his books. The whole book was like watching a movie. It was cool how much you could visualize the story.

If the author is trying to pass along an opinion or bring up issues, they are as follows: enjoy yourself, have a little fun here or there, take risks (as in take dangerous roads in the woods), go on plenty of camping trips, go hunting and fishing often, and do crazy stuff as a kid. I agree with his philosophies, especially the fishing part but I'm still not all the way there on the dangerous, mountainous roads. You should probably live life with a more serious outlook than Patrick McManus or his pal Rancid Crabtree, but some people live life too seriously so this is a good reminder not to make life too stressful. I totally agree. Just reading this book helped me to have a little fun, relax and laugh my cares away. This collection of tales clearly had a purpose and that was to make people laugh. I laughed. If you read this book you will also laugh. Patrick McManus shows the world the importance of laughter. He shows how sad life is without laughter by making you laugh. Sounds kind of weird but trust me, it works.

Overall, I thought How I Got This Way by Patrick McManus was really good. It doesn't have the action or suspense that most books these days have but it sure has the right amount of humor.  I would recommend this book to all, but some of Patrick McManus's other books were much better. If you would like to know some of his better books, just ask.

Ranger's Apprentice and The Burning Bridge John Flanagan

The Ranger's Apprentice is a fun book but not quite a challenging read. (I guess that could be a good or bad thing.) I thought this was a pretty cool book, however it was not one of my favorites. This is a fictional book that takes place in medieval times. This is the second in the series of ten.

In the first book Will was chosen to be the apprentice to the ranger Halt. In the last book Will defeated Morgarath's two assassins. The book ended with war being declared between Will's country, Araluen, and the outcast Morgarath.Morgarath was banished to the mountains of rain and night several years ago and since then has been creating an army of Warlags: Bear-like creatures with low intelligence but an uncanny ability to fight.

Now preparing for the war Will has accepted a small, simple quest. His job, along side another ranger and a warrior named Horace, is to deliver a message to the land of Celtica, the city next to Will's home Redmont. The task should be completed easily, however when the threesome arrive in the city of Celtica they are astonished to find the city abandoned. Now it's up to Will to find the cause why the city was abandoned and possibly give his country the upper-hand in the war. It will take a lot of dangerous spying, fighting and skill to possibly save his life and possibly save his country.

This book brings up several good points, however I think the main message to take away from this book is trust and forgiveness. Several times in this book Will has to trust his companion Horace the warrior. First, Will had to forgive Horace for the wrong he had done earlier that year, then he had to continually trust Horace with his life. Just like Will forgives and forgets what Horace had done to upset him, can learn to better forgive and be a better friend.

This was a good, well written book and all in all I enjoyed it. At the beginning of the book it starts out slow, like most books, but as I got into it, the book really intrigued me and I wanted to keep reading. This was definitely an improvement from the last book. I liked this book and I will definitely read the next book. This book deserves a A-       

  

A Child Called "It" by David Pelzer

        A Child Called "It" is a very Very VERY sad story about a young boy named Dave. At the begining, he talks  about  how good and happy his family is until his parents start fighting. And his mother starts drinking. . . a lot. Then, she would beat him just for the fun of it. None of his brothers were harmed. Just him.
        At first it wasn't to terrible. A few punches here and there. Then, all of a sudden his mother became very violent. Beating him every chance she got, and only letting him eat every ten days! It got so bad that she brunned him, STABBED him, and even tried to drown hin in their own bath tub! He had no  bed, just a newspaper and the floor. Plus, he had the worst punishments I have ever heard of .
        Let me remmind you that this started happening when he was only seven years old, and didn't stop until he was almost fourteen! Fourteen! Even worse, he was  the oldest, and his younger brothers would join in on what his mother called "the game."
        I do not recommend this book to people who don't like violence. This story is truly heartbreaking. I cried through the entire thing! Mainly because i put myself in his situation. What would I do? How would I live? Sadly, many c hildren do not live through this stuff.
        This is one of the worst child abuse cases in America, but someone could easily top that record. So, we need to stop child abuse! Please, if you are being abused or someone you know. There are many hotlines avalible along with helpful gardians. David Pelzer wrote two other books that have helpful information as well.

The Giver By: Lois Lowery

At first I seriously thought this book was about Santa Claus, judging by the title and old man on the cover. Anyways, this book is not about Santa, but about a town that lives a colorless, thoughtless, sameness community. A boy named Jonas is chosen to become the Receiver of Memory, apprentice to the Giver. The Giver is the only person in the community who can see color, think his own thoughts, and has memories of everything.

Through the course of a year of training under the Giver, Jonas learns that his father's job is to "release", or kill infants that don't meet the requirements of other babies in the community. Well this freaks Jonas out, and he decides to take a baby scheduled for release(who has happened to live with him for a whole year) named Gabriel. As he wanders outside the community he stumbles upon another community celebrating Christmas.

I absolutely think that this is one of the most spectacular books I've ever read. It's not much of an action or thriller, which I usually read. This book is more touching, and it leaves you thinking hard, which I love. I also liked how the book got me so involved. I felt the need to be with Jonas, and help him through his hard life. This book has definitely reached my top favorites.

Mockingjay ~ Suzanne Collins

Warning: Spoiler Alert

Everyone has at least heard of the Hunger Games. In this book, the story continues. Katniss's and Gale's families have escaped the bombing and chaos of their District - which has taken part in the uprising of Panem - and taken refuge in District 13 (which was supposed to be long gone). People have built almost an underground city, base, fortress, haven, whatever you want to call it. Everyone is planning on Katniss being their Mockingjay, joining the rebel forces, as well as killing President Snow. Meanwhile, Peeta is being tortured by the Capitol for warning District 13 about an attack the Capitol is arranging for them. When they finally get Peeta back, he tries to kill Katniss. He has been somewhat brainwashed to think that Katniss is the enemy. After Katniss recovers, a group of refugees, lead by her, sets out to go through with the plan to kill Snow. The end is interesting, like with Snow, and Prim dying. Oh yeah, and Katniss ends up with Peeta. So that should make you either happy or not, depending on which guy you liked. (I liked Gale better!) I think that Suzanne Collins picked a unique (and kind of depressing) ending. Then again, the books aren't exactly happy, with the whole plot being North America turned into a dictatorship, and kids having to kill other kids. I just think that Prim didn't have to die. I still don't fully understand why she had that happen. To be honest, I didn't love this book. I found it kinda boring. Nothing really happens. They just sit around District 13 forever, and when something exciting happened, it just turned boring 10 seconds later. You might've like it, but it seemed to me that the series went downhill from the second one. The first one was definitely the best, just in my opinion. I give this book a B.

The Help

The Help by Katheryn Stockett, is a very inspiring and hopeful book of how whites treat blacks on their color. But of course, this treatment is a very, very harsh one. In the little town of Jackson, Mississippi, in 1962, Miss Skeeter a white woman, who wants nothing more than to be a writer and publisher, and with the wasted hope of getting her a husband by her mother, she soon makes two very good friends, Aibileen and her best friend Minny. Aibileen has taken care of 19 white mothers babies, and Minny the best cook has the sassiest mouth in Jackson. Until one day Skeeter has this marvelous idea to write a novel about the help and the families they have taken care of.  But she needs the help to help her.  With much difficulty she succeeds!!! While time ticks fast, Skeeter Phelan manges to write the novel before crunch time. With much humor, a little bit of romance, and don't forget the hilarious parts with Celia Foote and Minny! This book is absolutely amazing! I loved every part of it, and it was so cleverly written, to show how each character talked and acted. I wouldn't change a thing about this book.

I am Number Four, Pittacus Lore

Action, adventure, romance, and aliens! What book could possibly have all of these things wrapped up neatly into one piece of literature? Well, ladies and gentlemen I give you I am Number Four! I loved it being the Sci-Fi junky I am, raised on Stephen Hawking and Stargate SG-1. This story, this tale has a little something for everyone.

I am Number four is set in the present but it starts years ago on a planet called Lorien. The people of Lorien have always been peaceful but a run in with a hostile race of aliens know as Mogadorians ended their world. In the fight Lorien was destroyed. Luckily a small group of nine special children and their nine guardians made it out alive. They landed on earth. These children are very special because they are of the few Loric people who in time will gain powers known as legacies. They are the future of the Loric race, so they are being hunted by the Mogadorians. To ensure they couldn't all just be wiped out a charm was placed on the nine children. Each was given a number one through nine. They could only be killed in numerical order, that is unless two of them were to encounter each other then everyone is fair game.

So who do you think this story follows? Gee I wonder. Well, it's Number Four or as he is currently called John Smith. He and his guardian Henri have been moving around for years. Their latest move after the death of Number Three was to Paradise, Ohio. In Paradise so many things happen. John develops his first legacy, makes a best friend, and falls in love. He faces so many challenges and has to fight the biggest battle of his life. The going only gets harder for our dear friend, his story has just begun.

Aliens and the supernatural have always been exciting to me. I do believe in all of my being that they exsist. We aren't alone, it's just not possible. I would love to be involved with something like this if it really happened. How cool would that be, fighting aliens? It'd be awesome. This book filled me with wonder and excitement. It totally deserves the A I give it! Whoo!

Divergent

     Divergent is a super suspenseful book by Veronica Roth. I kind of thought it read like The Hunger Games. It is pretty similar with power and the government and stuff like that. It is a very thrilling book that has tons of cliffhangers. It has you on the edge of your seat the whole book. You just never know what is going to happen next. Their is a lot of pretty brutal times where someone gets the crap beat out of them and others are actually somewhat fragile. It is a very good book and once you start reading you might not be able to stop. 

     There are five different factions that people choose to go into when they're sixteen. The Dauntless (the brave), Abnegation(the selfless), the Erudite(the intelligent), the Candor(the honest), and the Amity(the peaceful). Beatrice grew up in Abnegation but chose to switch to the Dauntless. She went through the three stages of Dauntless initiation, meeting multiple friends on her way, and came into the Dauntless as rank number one in her age. After the initiates complete the third stage they are injected with what they think is a tracking device. The next day Beatrice wakes up to her initiates under control of the Erudite leader Jeanine. Beatrice is not controlled by this because she is special. She is Divergent. She finds her family and Four, her trainer, and tries to rescue everyone she can but Four is captured and put under control as well. Later, Beatrice has to face Four, after already losing her mom and dad. Four is able to fight off the control and they destroy the control system. They run away to the Amity after starting a war. 

     This was by far one of my favorite books ever. It was intense, fast paced, and had me on the edge of my seat the whole book. There is only one word to describe this book. "AMAZING." It was the only book I have enjoyed in a long time. Everyone should read this book. 

Infamous By: Sherilyn Kenyon

• Infamous is the third book in the Chronicles of Nick series. I have reviewed the first two in the series. Here's the first one and here's the second. This book is very inappropriate. The very first thing that happens in the book is that a bunch of fake photos are shown to students destroying someones reputation. Immediately after this another student's reputation is also ruined. After this a website is released that gives hurtful information on every student.After this happens the main protagonist Nick sets out to stop it. So he immediately goes to Bubba's store to get help tracking down who registered the domain. There he gains the help of Mark Bubba's best friend. Despite bring a computer genius Mark cannot find the person who registered the domain as the used a company to register it. Just after making this discovery Nick sees a the future of the girl who's reputation is destroyed and rushes off to save her from this fate. On his way back he get's beaten because someone thought he was the one who gave away information.This sends Nick to the hospital. Here he's put into a coma chemically. This was the worst thing to do to Nick as it sends him to Azmodea. A place where Nick was told never to go because it's pretty much the worst place for him. So everyone and there mom is trying to protect him. Everyone including Pestilence of the four horseman. That shows how important t is to get nick out of there. During his trip to Azmodea we learn many important plot points that if I told you the book would be spoiled for you.In closing it's a very good book with a lot dramatic twists. It gives amazing insight on how cruel people can be and how big of a problem cyber-bullying can be. It's well worth a read. I give it an A+. Show me what you think in he comments if you read it.

The Sinking of the Titanic

When you hear about the Titanic, you probably think of the romance movie. Well, this book had zero mushy, gross stuff in it. It was full of first hand accounts from the survivors. It had the heart breaking stories of children torn from their parents, newly-wed wives being wrenched from their new spouses. This book was absolutely amazing. Usually, you hear the Titanic's story from teachers. You don't really get how awful the event was until you read from the point of view of people that were actually on the boat.

I loved this book. It's outstanding. If you have a weak heart or stomach, I would not recommend this book. To everyone else, you should definitely read it. It may have a little romance in it, if you consider wives clutching to their husbands who refused to get on a lifeboat before the women and children do romance. I give this book an A+.

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice
by Jane Austen

This is the tale of two opposites. Elizabeth Bennet(or Lizzy) and Mr.Darcey(*sigh*). The...woman to put it simply, and the wealthy man. These two people meet when Darcey and his friend Mr.Bingley purchase Netherfield Park, a large estate near the Bennet's house. Mr.Bingley is also a wealthy man and he is so kind and has such appealing manners that every one comes to like him very much. Especially Lizzy's sister Jane.

Bingley hosts a dance at Netherfield and that is where Lizzy and Darcey meet. But people don't always have good first impressions of each other. Darcey appears to be proud, rude and self involved. After that night Elizabeth wants nothing to do with him, but fate has other plans for these two people. And they will both learn that love is much harder then hatred.


This is my favorite book of all time. The story is inviting, the characters have so much depth it's like you can feel them and the writing! Only a fool would not love Jane Austen's writing. I've read this book three times this year alone. I've seen all the movie versions(the best is the BBC version aka the one in the picture), I'm a bit obsessive about it true but that's only because of how powerful her words are. They give me comfort like an old "blanky" or a favorite toy. Real love is dying day by day. You only see it in books and sometimes in the places your familiar with. Their love is real. No vampire/werewolf feuds. No poems about just the color of her eyes. That stuff is fake. Real love has conflict, problems in the early stages but you know, you know, they'll break through it because they love each other.This book is my security blanket. My secret world of British accents everywhere and fully clothed men jumping into ponds:). It changed me.


Okay, so you may think that this book is only for the romantics and classic literature lovers of the world. Wrong! This book is also for people who have crazy and hilarious mothers, embarrassing siblings, the shy guys, the bold and hot headed feminists of the world(keep it up) and so many others. This book can relate to everyone. Lizzy also has sisters that think they can sing but they can't, ones who are silly beyond belief and a mother who special is to talk about people...loudly...while they're still in the room. There is in fact a shy guy in this book. Talking isn't easy for him especially to the girl he loves.
This book relates to us so much it's not even possible to list all the ways how it does.
In conclusion, this book is a worth while read. Who knows maybe you'll love it like I do. If you hate it...we have a problem. I recommend this book to all of you.

Twice Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris

Twice Upon a Marigold is written by Jean Ferris. This book embraces all sorts of genres including fantasy, Romance, Comedy, and tragedy. I loved this book for many reasons. Rather than a violent, horror book, Twice Upon a Marigold is enchanting. It is the sequel to Once Upon a Marigold.

In a little village, far, far away, a little old mayor found something unusual in the river while fishing. Why, it is a person, an actual person who is dressed in very fine clothes and jewelry. She cannot recall her name or where she came from, but despite her amnesia, she is very kind. Not for long! After the amnesia disappears, she discovers that she is actually Queen Olympia. She becomes a royal pain AGAIN!

Back in the kingdom where Olympia is from, everyone is quite happy. Nobody cares she is gone, because she was always so rude and selfish. All she cares about is power, and when she finally returns to the castle, a dark and evil feeling fills the air. OLYMPIA IS BACK!

Twice Upon a Marigold is an entertaining fairy tale. I was in California when I was reading this book, and to be honest, I was reading the book, rather than swimming in the pool with my friends. I was always up late waiting to see what was next. I love happy endings and that is what drove me to keep reading this book. I just hated Olympia and wanted it to end happy, so I HAD to keep reading. When I finished this book I was content and liked how it ended.

Evil is something horrible. I believe that the author portrayed this very well with Olympia. I felt a lot of anger toward her because she did so many horrible and selfish things. It made me wonder, how someone could be so cruel. The end of the book really hit home with me because it changed to something good, but I won't tell you what happens.

I compare this to those in the world who are totally clueless and don't ever think about others. That is why our world is so selfish at times. There is a lot of evil out there that is uncontrollable, all we can do is be kind back, which Marigold does very well. She is very kind and good always overrules evil.

I loved this book and the things it taught me. It was entertaining and fun to read. You should definitely consider reading Once Upon a Marigold first. I give this book an big magical A.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

This was a good book, not amazing, but it wasn't bad. The one downer is that it was really hard to follow. Its a mystery, and it uses all these big words, and London slang, so its kind of hard to understand whats going on. It has a good ending, and after you read the ending, the book makes more sense, which is how it is with most mystery boks, but like I said, this book was especially hard to follow.

This book is told in first person by John Utterson, as he investigates the case of his old friend, Dr. Jekyll and the strange Mr. Hyde. While walking with his friend Richard Enfield, Utterson learns about a strange man named Mr. Hyde. Richard told a story about how Mr. Hyde trampled a little girl, disappeared around a street corner, and came back and paid her relatives with a check signed by Dr. Jekyll. Really weird.
