Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer is an excellent book. Artmeis is a twelve year old criminal mastermind with an IQ appproaching Einstein. Even though he is super smart, he still believes in magic, and sets out to learn more about it. Because his father is missing and presumed dead and his mother is on permanent bed-rest, Artemis gets into all sorts of mischeif with his peronal bodyguard and friend, Butler.
The twosome end up catching a fairy by the name of Holly Short. When you think of fairy, you probably think of a gentle little elf with wings, but this is not the case. The fairies in this book are technologically advanced, live underground, and despise humans. Holly is a member of the LEP, which is the fairy version of the C.I.A. She goes above ground to regain some magic and is caught by Artemis and Butler.
Artemis has studied all sorts of fairy knowledge from something known as The Book, which is the bible of fairies. He captures Holly and holds her prisoner in his basement. He tells the other members of the LEP that he will let her go in exchange for one thing. One metric ton of pure gold. This leads to an epic rescue mission with plenty of twists and turns.
In this book, the author brings up many issues that are present in the real world. He says how poorly we take care of the Earth and how greedy and cunning people can be. Although the author is straightforward to the point of rudeness, I believe many of the issues and themes in this book are important and often overlooked. He mentions several times how polluted and disgusting the Earth is and how people don't care for it. I think many of Eoin Colfer's views are a little bit extreme, but still worth bringing up.
In my opinion, Artemis Fowl is a great book and is definitely worth the time to read. It is very creative and the author must be fairly clever to come up with so many plots and ideas. I really enjoyed the humor and suspense that is in this book, as well as the different characters. I think everyone should read this book, especially yound adults. A- Fantasy Adventure
