Pendragon Book Eight: The Pilgrims of Rayne

Pendragon Book Eight: The Pilgrims of Rayne
By: D.J. MacHale

In book eight of this exciting fantasy series, Bobby Pendragon, a sixteen year old traveler from Earth, is on yet another great adventure. This time he's on Ibara, a primitive tropical island with jungles, beaches, and mountains.  Unfortunately this is no paradise, because Bobby knows that Saint Dane is close and planning an attack on the village of Rayne. Saint Dane is a wicked traveler who wants to destroy Halla, which is basically everything that has ever existed and will ever exist, to rebuild it in his own way. What Bobby doesn't know is Ibara holds a secret. Most islanders don't know the secret. Yet again, Bobby must find the turning point and push it in the right direction before it's too late.

This was a great book filled with suspense, action, drama, and some humor.  It switches between two points of view. First person for Bobby and third person for Courtney.  I liked how the author switches stories and can make them both interesting--you can get involved with two different adventures! Unfortunately, that also means tons of cliffhangers, because right when Bobby's story gets really exciting, it switches to Courtney's, and vise versa.

One of the points the book brings up is how family comes first and is most important. It's obvious why evil people always target families when they blackmail people. It's wicked and effective, because people care for their family members and don't want to see them hurt.  Mark has to make a decision regarding his parents that could alter the course of Halla.  If I were in his shoes, I probably would have made the same decision. SPOILER ALERT! His decision could help Saint Dane, the menace who they've been fighting from the start. Would you do it for your family?

All and all this was a fantastic book. I would recommend it to everyone who likes fantasy books, but read them in order or it could be quite confusing. I would give this book and the series both an A+.
