The story took place in 1939 in Germany around Hitlers time. Liesel Meminger is sent to a foster home in Munich because her mom was summoned to a concentration camp for being a communist. On the journey to Munich her brother passes away. At the burial site of her brother, a grave digger apprentice drops a book out of his pocket. Leisel picks it up, even though she can't read. She figures it as a way to remember her brother. Once she arrives to her new home, she meets her new parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Leisel gets put right to school in a Hitler uniform, she is in the little kid class because she can't read. Liesel makes friends with a boy name, Rudy, he has high hopes and dreams and encourages Liesel.

Hans Hubermann was saved once by Max Vandenberg and keeping his promise, he allows him to hide in his basement because he is a jew. Max and Liesel become good friends. Max writes books about their friendship. The book he wrote is published in the novel.
Liesel learns to love reading so much that she gets caught stealing books from Nazi book burnings by the major's wife. She invites Liesel to come read in her library, and encourages her to read and write as much as possible.
One day when Hans gives a jew being sent to a concentration camp a piece of bread, he gets sent to be in the military. At this time air raids were often flying over Germany and it was very dangerous. Max has to leave because Hans is drafted.
Liesel soon learns more about her biological parents. While writing her life story, an air raid strikes Munich. The book ends in a great way.
I enjoyed this book a lot because something new and exciting was always happening! The book was also very interesting because of the point-of-veiw it was written in, which was death. It was very abnormal, but makes the story sound better. I was frustrated with the book at times because, I felt like the author wouldn't go into enough detail when describing important events and sometimes even people. Although the book did sometimes leave me trying to figure out what was going on, I enjoyed it.
The Book Thief encouraged me to read more and to be grateful for the books I have. I loved this book and I hope you will read it.
